Sukhasana
As the name suggests, this is the easiest cross-legged sitting posture. Sukhasana is not mentioned in any of the hatha yoga texts. Yogis advise beginners to first master the easy pose, and then move onto practicing more advanced meditative sitting postures.
Techniques:
- Sit on the floor with the legs stretched out in front
- Bend one leg, touching the sole of the foot to the inside of the opposite thigh
- Bend the other leg and place the foot under the opposite thigh
- Keep the palms on the knees
- Spine, neck and head are kept upright
- Keep the eyes closed and arms relaxed
Contra-indications:
- Severe knee conditions
- Slipped disc
- Sciatica
- Do not practice with an arched back
Benefits:
- Easiest, most comfortable sitting position
- Ideal for people who cannot sit in difficult meditative positions
- Facilitates physical and mental balance
