Prana vayu is located in the heart region.
It has the function of drawing the universal life-force into the body for distribution, and finally, its expiration.
The subtle or gross materials that enter the body are a result of prana vayu.
All sensory perceptions and respiration are due to prana vayu. It operates the autonomic nervous system of the cervical region, governs the verbal mechanism of the vocal cords, the movements of the gullet and the respiratory tract.
If there is any disturbance to the pranic movement, there will be abnormality in the body. Both pain and pleasure are due to prana vayu. It is sattvic (pure) and light by nature. Therefore, prana vayu is considered to be therapeutic.
There is a relationship between prana and the mind, as well as prana and the breath. Breathing becomes rhythmic when prana is regulated, and this automatically influences the mind. For example, anger is accompanied by fast and heavy breathing. When prana is irregular, the mind becomes unsteady, and conversely, when it is still, the mind becomes still. Thorough cleansing is possible only through proper pranic flow. Therefore, one should control and balance the prana vayu.
Prana vayu can be classified as both gross and subtle. The gross component can be controlled by a yogic diet, and the subtle part can be maintained with regular practice of pranayama and meditation techniques.
