Do Not Try To Find Psychic Powers, Let Them Find You!

“Siddhis” or psychic powers may be extremely tempting to achieve as one begins to practice yoga. After all, who does not want to have something that makes him stand out of the crowd, and leave people in awe of him? Ironically, it is this very attitude that leads to these powers becoming totally unattainable. Siddhis are not meant to be looked at as the aim of yoga. This aim should instead be spiritual and physical wellbeing, and liberation from stress and worldly desires. Siddhis are considered as a “by-product” of this supreme experience.

In fact, there are many yogis who describe siddhis as a distraction in the practice of yoga. This is because when one begins to experience even a fraction of these psychic powers, he believes that his purpose has been solved, and that there is nothing else left for him to achieve from yoga. If one practices yoga with the sole intent of attaining these powers, he is sure to experience failure and downfall. Instead, the aim should be to conquer the mind and the sensory organs, after which these sensory powers will come naturally. The real benefits of yoga lie not in being able to mesmerize others by unworldly abilities, but instead in attaining oneness with the supreme spirit.

Those who intend to develop psychic powers by practicing yoga may end up doing more harm than good. These people are usually emotionally weak and unstable, due to which they wish to gain some sort of power, not as a part of a spiritual experience, but instead as a boost to their egos. It is nearly impossible to reap any sort of benefits with such a frame of mind. Such a practice of yoga is no better than the abuse of a drug, which will result in further disturbance and in some cases, even hallucinations, prompted by an obsession to attain psychic powers.

Siddhis should instead be treated as a benchmark of spiritual enlightenment, and should not be boasted of. Even though it is natural for one to feel fascinated by the attainment of these powers, yet a true yogi will understand that these are just a part of the entire experience, and shall not feel a desire to unnecessarily use or exhibit these powers. He shall be able to control his ego as he progresses to higher levels of psychic empowerment. Since this is a rare attribute, most of the yoga practitioners harbor siddhis without even being aware of them.

Those who attain these powers are the ones who were never looking for them. As you progress to the higher realms of consciousness, you shall find these powers coming to you, instead of you going after them. This is the lesson taught in all the ancient texts, and is even found in the Bible, which says, “Seek ye first the Kingdom of Heaven; everything else will be added unto you”. Your aim must not be to attain powers that you can brag about, but instead to seek salvation from the cycle of birth and death, and to attain oneness with the universal force.

As you begin inching towards this ultimate goal, you shall experience a peaceful state of consciousness that will be unaffected by the gains and losses down the lane. With yoga and stress being polar opposites, you shall be freed of all disturbances and botheration. And somewhere on this path to spiritual enlightenment, you shall experience the magic of siddhis taking over you, when you are least expecting it. Stop looking for ways to defy gravity and foresee the future through yoga, and let these powers look for you instead!
