Winter is the time for festivities, partying, gifting and holiday shopping. Of activities galore that begin with Halloween, building up to Thankgiving and gaining momentum through the end of the year.

 

However, this season of joy and cheer also brings with it a lot of associated stress and anxiety. In between all the baking, decorating and the shopping, the holiday season might be leaving you tired, stressed and irritated. Watch out, that Black Friday might have caused you more harm than just a dent in your wallet!

 

In the frenzy to have a ‘perfect’ festive season, we tend to build up too much excitement and activity, often more than what our bodies can handle. With our immunities also at a low, and winter viruses in the air, it does not take much for winter to become the harbinger of several malaises.

 

Don’t let this bog you down. Gear up to strengthen your immunity and tackle the winter blues head on.

  • Yoga is a simple but effective way to keep up your energy levels and rejuvenate yourself. Simple but regular Yogic practice can help you build up resistance against a lot of winter related ailments. Start off your day with Yoga practice. Stretching poses like the Triangle pose, and the Mountain pose will help you unwind and build up warmth in the body. Continue with bending poses like Seated Forward Bend.
  • Practice sun salutations to keep the body warm and flexible.
  • While out at a mall or shopping, if you feel exhausted, sit in a corner in a meditative pose such as the Easy pose or the Lotus pose for a few minutes. Breathe slowly but deeply. Try it a couple of times and you will feel the exhaustion lifting from your body.
  • Pranayama or Yogic breathing exercise help a lot during the winter. To practice, you need to sit erect on the floor or on a mat. It is recommended to use a rug in order to not feel to the chill. Close your left nostril with two fingers and inhale deeply through the right nostril while keeping your eyes closed. Then alternate. Repeat the process a number of times but do not overdo it. Regular practice of pranayama keeps you healthy and hearty.
  • Lastly, before you sleep, lie down in the Corpse pose, close your eyes and relieve the day. Slowly concentrate inwardly and allow your body to completely relax.
