The word ‘yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Yuj’, which means ‘union’. Yoga is a holistic practice that unites the mind, body and soul, resulting in a supreme state of being, free from all physical and psychological complications. The benefits of yoga extend from the mere physical wellbeing of the practitioner to a peaceful and relaxed state of mind. It works from within, eradicating the root cause of various disorders, and making one feel rejuvenated and healthy.
While breathing might seem to be something that comes naturally to us, we actually rarely ever pay attention to this vital process. Yoga helps us to become aware of the breathing process, and when practiced regularly, works to boost our immunity, eliminate toxins, and regulate the bodily secretions. All this makes us attain an optimal state of health, and feel good from within. Some of the common disorders on which yoga works include:
• Joint pain
Yoga lays key emphasis on body posture and circulation, both of which are vital for the health of joints, muscles and bones. The regular practice of yoga results in stronger muscles, reduced body fat and improved stamina, resulting in healthier and stronger joints.
• Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis, which affects millions across the globe can be significantly treated with the regular practice of yoga. Yoga works by increasing the bone density of patients with the disorder. This is especially useful for women undergoing menopause, who are at a higher risk of osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis and other bone disorders.
• Cardiovascular disorders
Yoga improves the circulation of blood in the body, and eliminates all toxic substances. It also improves the body’s metabolism, reducing work load on the heart. The overall effect of yoga is lower blood pressure, reduced cholesterol levels, and increased agility. All this is therapeutic in the management of cardiovascular disorders.
• Psychological complications
Yoga has multifaceted benefits on our mind. It reduces stress and makes us feel peaceful, relaxed, and focused. It also helps in curing various mental disorders, including insomnia and migraines. Yoga has also been found to benefit children suffering from learning disorders like autism, and the elderly affected by neurological disorders like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
• Obesity
Yoga is gaining popularity as one of the most effective ways to lose weight. It works by burning fat cells and improving metabolism. Bikram yoga is a preferred type of yoga for weight loss. As opposed to various weight loss practices like diet pills, crash diets, excessive workouts etc., yoga has no side-effects on the body, and instead improves the overall health of the practitioner, along with aiding in weight loss.
• ‘Non-curable’ diseases
Diseases like AIDS, Parkinson’s disease and cancer, which are declared ‘non-curable’ by conventional medicine can be effectively managed with the practice of certain yoga asanas.
All in all, yoga is that one practice that can truly change your life. It has something to offer to everyone, and as you begin to learn it, you will surely find the perfect postures for your wellbeing. Start today, for a better tomorrow!
