A recent study conducted to evaluate the effect of yoga on women who have undergone breast cancer treatment, reported psychological and physiological benefits on the subjects. The randomized study was conducted on 31 women, 16 of whom underwent a specialized yoga program, and 15 who enrolled in a health education program, to serve as a control group in the study.
The aim of the study was to observe whether yoga, which has been proven to be beneficial in various health complications, had any impact on the fatigue levels of breast cancer survivors. The women who had participated in the yoga program reported markedly decreased fatigue levels. This effect persisted up to over three months post-treatment. The women who participated in health education reported no effect on their fatigue levels.
The yoga practitioners also had higher vigor and an improved ability to manage stress and fatigue, as compared to their counterparts in the control group. Both groups reported improvements in depression and levels of perceived stress. The reason behind the improvement in the control group was believed to be the effect of counseling on breast cancer survivorship, as well as the positive impact of group support and attention.
