Dr John Ebenezer, a Bangalore-based doctor, has formulated a unique mode of treatment for arthritis, named the ‘Total Knee Restoration Technique’. The technique uses the principles of yoga for attaining a mind-body balance, to cure arthritis. This comes as a significant step towards the management of the disease, which is the number one disease affecting the adult population in India, outnumbering AIDS as well as diabetes.
Dr Ebenezer will talk about his research findings at the 63rd annual international conference of ‘The Egyptian Orthopaedic Association’, which is being held at Cairo between December 12 and December 15. He explains that knee replacement surgery is a feasible treatment option only in end-stage arthritis, which accounts for just 5-10 % of the total patients suffering from the disease. With a cost of upto Rs. 400,000, it is beyond the reach of many.
Moreover, many of the patients do not fulfill the medical and anesthetic requirements of the procedure, leaving the option open for a very slight percentage. The only options that such patients are left with are substandard alternative treatments or an entire lifetime of restricted movement and painful joints. Dr. Ebenezer’s technique breaks free from the conventional treatments like physiotherapy and therapeutic exercises, by focusing on the creation of a healthy mind-body balance.
He asserts that the ‘Total Knee Restoration Technique’ does not just help the patients at a physical level, but also helps them to regain the emotional and mental strength that they need to cope with the disease.
