Hypothyroidism can be defined as reduced thyroid gland activity and a resultant failure to generate the required amount of thyroid hormone. The thyroid hormones are secreted by the pituitary gland located in the brain. These hormones, including triiodothyronine and thyroxine, control protein production and body temperature. They also maintain the metabolism of the human body. If these hormones are not secreted properly the functioning of the human body can get affected adversely.

This ailment is seen more in women than men. If left untreated, several problems like infertility, cardiac disease, obesity and joint pain may occur. It is usually seen in women who are above 50 but younger women might also develop the condition. A type of hypothyroidism, named Cretinism, is seen in infants.

  • Apart from these factors, iodine deficiency may also lead to hypothyroidism.
