Goiter, also known as bronchocele, refers to a condition that is characterized by swelling in the thyroid gland. Goiter cure aims at treating this malaise and treatment of goiter is often a holistic process which involves lifestyle changes. It can also cause swelling in the larynx or neck. However, one can face symptoms like persistent cough, difficulty in breathing and problems in swallowing if goiter increases in size. Women are more prone to goiter than men.

The main symptom for a person with goiter is swelling of the thyroid gland. This may eventually become a noticeable lump in the throat. The patient may be more aware of it - a visible swelling at the base of the neck - when looking in the mirror and shaving or putting on makeup. Hoarseness (voice), coughing more frequently than usual, feeling of tightness in the throat, swallowing difficulties and breathing difficulties (less common) are the major symptoms of goiter. Iodine deficiency is the chief cause of goiter and curing this can contribute to the treatment of goiter.

  • Yogurt and cow's milk are also considered good sources of iodine.
  • Watercress and different types of lettuce are important natural sources of iodine.

A normal person requires at least 150 micrograms of iodine regularly. Lactating mothers and pregnant women should be careful about adequate iodine intake.
