According to Ayurveda, there are six seasons, namely, Shishir, Basant, Greeshma, Varsha, Sharad and Hemant. We can take advantage of Shishir (winter) season for building our health, by keeping ourselves alert and well informed, as this season is favorable in such prospects.

We can take full advantage of this season by following appropriate dietary and lifestyle habits. You can store lots of energy in your body for the whole year by paying proper attention to your health in this season. But still, even in this favorable season, some health problems may arise to make us unwell. So to keep ourselves free from any ailment, we should follow some Ayurvedic health remedies.

Diseases and Their Remedies

The main health problems in this season are cold, cough, joint pains and problem of respiratory system. Besides, we are also faced with the problem of cracked hands, legs, lips and face. In this season, cracked feet are very common. Here some effective remedies are being given in order to protect ourselves from above said problems:
 
• Take 1 cup of milk and 1 cup of water, add 2-3 gm of turmeric powder, 2 pieces of black pepper, 5-7 leaves of basil plant and cook this mixture. When only 1 cup of this mixture is left in the pan, strain it and drink it every morning and evening with honey or sugar crystals. It will protect you against cold and cough.
• Chewing 2-4 pieces of black pepper and around 20 pieces of raisins is also helpful in curing cold and cough.
• If suffering from cough or bad throat, then taking 5-10 gm of Adarak Pak (ginger mixed with sugar and cooked) is advisable. To prepare Adarak Pak, grate 500 gm of ginger and fry it in 100 gm of desi ghee till it turns red. Add syrup made with 500 gm of jaggery. In this mixture, add 10 gm each of the followings: mace, black pepper, cinnamon, bay leaf, long pepper, baividang and peeparamool. All these should be added in powdered form only.
• Drinking tea made of basil leaves, cinnamon, ginger, black pepper and cardamom is also very helpful in case of cold and flu.
• Make small balls with 50 gm sesame seeds, 20 gm thyme and 100 gm jaggery, shaping each ball with approximately 10 gm of mixture. Eating this can cure children’s habit of urination while sleeping.
 
Joint Pains

• Take ginger powder, fenugreek, thyme, turmeric powder and meetha puranjan in equal quantity and make their powder. Take it every day morning and evening with lukewarm milk. This remedy is highly effective in curing problems of joint pains.
• Cook 50 gm of amla juice in 20 gm of desi ghee. When only 40 gm of this mixture is left then put it aside and let it cool. Take 20 gm of this mixture every day morning and evening and this should be continued till 1-2 months. It will help in curing joint pains.

Problem of Cracked Heels

• Use sesame seed oil to cure cracked hands, legs and heels.
• Mix sesame seed oil with turmeric and wax and cook it. Apply this mixture on cracked heels and leave overnight.
 
Uses of Medicines

Take Ayurvedic medicine such as Chyavanprash, Asagandh Pak, Konch Pak, Badam Pak, Chandraprbha Vati and Makardhwaj Vati etc. as per advice of you health consultant.

What to Eat

Have seasonal fruits such as guava, carrot, amla and banana to increase immunity and to store energy in your body. In the same way, consumption of foods made with sesame seeds, linseed, jaggery, groundnut, sweet potatoes, dates, almond, cashew, walnut etc. is particularly healthy. Sprouted grains and cereals mainly green gram, Bengal grams and moth beans are also very healthy. Fenugreek leaves, white goose foot (bathua), onion, garlic and ginger should also be taken.

What not to Eat

Avoid having cold drinks and non-heated food. It is also advisable to avoid curd and foods with bitter tastes or chilies. Apart from this, there are some other facts also which should be kept in mind in this season, like doing Pranayama and Yogasanas and exercising regularly. Please remember that taking a nap during the day will not be good for you in this season.
