Ayurvedic concepts of scorpion poison (Vruschika visha)

Ayurveda classifies the scorpions into three types based on the origin.

Mild poisoned scorpion: Scorpions germinating from the cow dung or any form of rotten substances is mild poisoned (Manda Visha). They are of 12 types
Moderate poisoned: Those who germinated from the decayed wood / bricks are moderate poisoned. They are of three types.
Strong poisoned: Those which germinated from the decomposed carase of snake or any other poisonous putrid organic matter is strong poisoned. They are of 15 types.

Poisonous features

They are of two types namely general and specific features

General features

  • Poison is due to its sharp nature, causes burning sensation like fire in the beginning.
  • Spreads up wards
  • At the end, it localises at the site of sting
  • Severe pain
  • Burning sensation
  • Blackish discolouration
  • Pricking & throbbing types of pain

Specific features

  • Mild Poison: Pain, tremors, stiffness of the body, flow of blackish discoloured blood. In case of bite at the extremities the pain radiates upwards accompanied by burning sensation, perspiration, swelling of the bitten part & fever.
  • Moderate Poison: Swelling of the tongue, difficulty in digitations and deep fainting.
  • Strong poison: It produces poisonous impulses similar like snake poison and gives rise to pustules along with vertigo, burning sensation, fever and excessive discharge of blackish discoloured blood from the passages due to which the person dies soon.
  • Vagbhatta described another variety of scorpion called as ‘Uccitinga’ bites by its mouth which produces severe pain, stiffness of penis, horripulations, and feeling of toughness when water is sprinkled in the body. Vagbhatta says that this variety of scorpion move out only in nights.

Management

Generally in all poisons the cold therapy is given but in cases of scorpion poison, Ayurveda recommends hot therapy.

In the scorpion poisoning, fomentation, massage with ghee & salt, hot sprinklings, intake of ghee with edibles / ghee alone should be used.

Treatment according to the type of scorpion

Strong & moderate poisoned scorpion bite
Mild poisoned scorpion bite
Fomentation therapy around the bitten part
The oil prepared from the Vidaryadhi group of drugs should be sprinkled.
After the fomentation – incisions are made followed by application of powders of Haridra, Saindava lavana, Trikatu, and the fruits & flowers of Sireesha.
The affected part should be fomented mildly with the bolus prepared from anti venomous drugs
Tender leaves of Surasa pasted with the juice of Matulunga and the Cow’s urine in a lukewarm state /Luke warm Cow dung should be employed in plastering and fomenting the affected part.
Drink prepared with cold water, Chaturjataka and sugar / sugar mixed with cold milk should be recommend
Ghee mixed with honey, milk with profuse quantity of sugar
Fumigation therapy with feathers of cock/ peacock, Rock salt, oil, ghee mixed together.
Kusumbha flowers with two types of turmeric, straw (Kodrava) mixed with ghee can be used for fumigation.

Origination & Classification of insects (Keeta Visha)

Various kinds of insects germinate from the semen, feces, urine, putrefied bodies, eggs of the serpents are classified into different categories based on their vata, pitta, kapha constituency. But ultimately these insects are composed of the characters of all the three doshas. Though the insects are very small in size but could prove to be fatal. These are ultimately classified into four types

  • Vata - 18 types
  • Pitta - 20 types
  • Kapha – 13 types
  • Combination of all the three (Sannipatha) – 12 types

Features of sharp poisoned insect bite

  • The seat of the bite seems as if on fire / being burnt with strong alkali and is characterized by a red, yellow, white or vermillion colour.
  • Fever
  • Breaking & Aching pain
  • Horripulations
  • Vomiting
  • Thirst
  • Burning sensation in the body
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Excessive yawning
  • Shaking / weakness of the limbs
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Hiccough
  • Burning & cold sensation
  • Eruption of pustules
  • Swelling (Local)
  • Appearance of nodular glands
  • Erysipelas
  • Ketoid
  • Other symptoms of the specific dosha vitiated

Features of mild poisoned insect bite

  • Excessive salivation
  • Aversion towards to food
  • Vomiting
  • Heaviness in the head
  • Sensation of cold
  • Appearance of pustules
  • Urticaria
  • Other symptoms of the specific dosha vitiated

Management

Ayurveda recommends all purification therapies for cleaning up the poison completely from the body (Mild poison) and for the sharp poison bites the snake bite procedures should be followed.
Measures of treatment in case of three insects should be planned according to three doshas. In treatment, fomentation, hot pastes and irrigation should be applied except in condition of fainting and the site of bite being vitiated with suppuration and sloughing, besides all kinds of anti poisonous measures and repeated use of cleansing procedures should be strictly followed.

Honey bees (Brunga)

Types

Ayurveda classifies the honey bees into six types.

Poisonous types

Bite accompanied by

  • Swelling
  • Burning sensation
  • Pustules

Treatment

The application of the paste which prepared with black ant hill, cow urine is the best to remove the honey bee poison.

Lizard (Guhagodhika)

Poisonous features

  • Burning sensation
  • Oedema
  • Pain
  • Excessive sweating

Treatment

Saindhava Lavana, Maricha both should be taken in equal quantities with equal parts of neem seed powder. This combination is taken with either honey or ghee which helps in treating the Lizard bite.

Centipede (Satapadhi)

Types

They are divided into eight types

Poisonous features

A bite by the centipede is attended with swelling, pain & burning sensation in the heart / chest region. A bite by one of the white and red variety of centipede marked by violent epileptic fits, intolerable burning sensation, and eruptions with burning sensation.

Treatment

Antidote prepared with Kunkuma, Tagara, Sigru, Padmaka and two types of Haridra are pasted in the water and prove curative in cases of centipede bite.

Frog (Manduka)

They are divided into eight different species by Ayurveda

Poisonous features

Bite accompanied by

  • Itching sensation
  • Flow of yellow coloured foam from the mouth
  • Burning sensation
  • Vomiting
  • Severe epileptic attacks

Management

Antidote prepared from Meshasrungi, Patha, Nichula, Rohini, and Baluka is effective in all kinds of frog bites.

Mosquitoes (Mashaka)

They are divided into five different species by Ayurveda

Poisonous features

  • Itching & swelling of the affected part

Management

As similar to that of ant bite

Ants (Pipilika)

They are divided into six different species by Ayurveda

Poisonous features

  • Swelling
  • Burning sensation
  • Inflammation

Management

Paste prepared with the soil of black ant hill pasted with cow’s urine proves curative in cases of bites of flies, ants and mosquitoes.
