When visiting a naturopath for the first time, make sure you have enough time to spare. Naturopathy advocates a holistic treatment. The first appointment can take longer than expected as the examination usually extends beyond a mere medical diagnosis. One can expect to be asked questions about their lifestyle, current health, as well as medical history.
Not all naturopaths treat patients in the same way. They have various options for treating a patient. Normally, the patient's lifestyle and condition dictate what kind of changes he would be asked to make in his diet. They may also tell some patients to detoxify their body by using herbal remedies.
Naturopaths believe that by strengthening the body's immune system and following a fitness regime a person can keep most diseases at bay. They advise drinking plenty of water, about 10 to 12 glasses a day, to flush out the toxins from the body. This treatment also recommends a reduction in the patient's intake of spicy and fast foods.
This alternative therapy is very particular about selecting the right type of food. It recommends that people eat food that is rich in vital nutrients. Fresh fruit juice, vegetables, and fruits contain antioxidants that can strengthen a person's immune system. Naturopathy also emphasises that people should stay away from oily junk food, as well as frozen and preserved food.
Naturopaths also believe that an imbalance of nutrients in a person's diet can result in the development of various disorders and ailments. They strongly believe that large quantities of fat should not be consumed with an equally large amount of proteins.
However, while there are many followers, it is difficult to become a certified and recognized naturopathic physician. An aspirant needs to complete his graduation from the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians. Candidates can also enrol in certain correspondence courses to get such degrees.
Germany's Dr. Vincenz Priesnitz is credited with popularizing naturopathy in recent times. He achieved success with hydrotherapy and became popular soon thereafter. He believed that the root cause of an ailment lay in the accumulation of toxic elements in the patient's body. Other eminent proponents of naturopathy who have earned fame include Dr. Arnold Rickley and Dr. Johannes Schroth.
