Relaxation Pose

Shavasana
The relaxation pose or shavasana is a good way and often the preferred one to begin and end a yoga session. Following an asana practice ending in shavasana, the body may be in the anabolic state of metabolism during which organ and muscle repair and development is occurring.
Techniques:
- Lie flat on the floor
- With palms 6 inches away from the body, turned upwards
- Keep the feet apart comfortably
- The feet are relaxed and the palms are naturally open
- The head and the body should be in one line
- Remove any metal watches or jewelry from the body
- Adjust the clothing to be completely comfortable
- Minimize movements in the body
- Close the eyes
- Rest the whole body
- Focus on the breath and try to bring it into a natural rhythm
- After some time become aware of the surroundings and the bodys posture
- Slowly move the fingers, toes, head and feet
- Start to stretch the body in the lying down position
- Turn to one side of the body, support the body weight with the arms and sit up
Contra-indications:
- Should be performed in a quiet and secluded corner of the house
- The body must be kept completely still
Benefits:
- Relaxes the body and mind
- Develops body awareness
- Good preparatory practice for the advanced pratyahara practices
