Sarvangasana

The Sanskrit word sarvangasana means posture of complete body. It is derived from two words: ‘Sarva’ means everything or complete and ‘Anga’ refers to limb. This asana energizes all parts of the body and is considered as queen of all the asanas. It is refreshing and revitalizing. It is one of the best asanas for improving health and to keep the body & mind strong.

Techniques:

  • Lie down on the floor with the feet together
  • Keep the arms by the side of the body with the palms on the floor
  • Breathe in and hold the breath
  • Give gentle support to the lift by pressing the arms against the floor
  • Use the abdominal muscles to lift the legs up, keeping the knees straight
  • Using the arms as a lever, bring the legs up to a 45 degree angle with the trunk
  • Lift the buttocks up and slowly roll the spine off the floor
  • Move the forearms upward and bend the elbows
  • Place the palms under the middle part of the back
  • Support the back and elongate the legs upwards
  • Try to keep the trunk and the legs in one line
  • The chin presses against the throat pit
  • Balance the body on the elbows, upper arms, shoulders, back of the neck and head
  • Close the eyes and hold the pose for as long as is comfortable
  • Release the support of the back by moving the arms
  • Gently come out of the position lowering the spine down, vertebrae by vertebrae
  • Keeping the knees straight, lower the legs
  • Completely control all of the movements
  • Relax in Shavasana (Corpse Pose)

Contra-indications:

  • Enlarged thyroid
  • Cervical spondylitis
  • Slipped disc
  • High blood pressure
  • Pregnancy
