- Beginners should not indulge in any other kind of strenuous activity when starting yoga practice. Asana and pranayama especially must be practiced slowly, smoothly and rhythmically without disturbing the physical and mental state.
- One should not practice yoga whilst ill, unless under the proper guidance of a yoga expert.
- Breathing should be rhythmic, and nostril breathing is always preferable (as opposed to mouth breathing).
- When practicing yoga regularly, one should avoid fasting, being in the sun for long periods of time, bad company and activities requiring severe body exertion. Ask your consultant why.
- One should strictly avoid alcohol and mind-altering drugs during regular yoga practice.
- Minimising stimulants like coffee, tea and cigarettes before and after a yoga session is advised. However, a cup of milk is permitted fifteen minutes before or after practice.
- Patients who have had surgery in the recent past should consult a yoga professional.
- People taking medication or suffering from coronary heart disease, hypertension, severe infections (nose, ear and lung), chronic back pain, cervical spondylitis and other similar disorders should practice in the presence of a yoga consultant only.
- Taming the prana is like taming a wild animal. Yoga practices involve not only the physical and mental level but also the pranic level, which is very subtle and lies between the physical and mental sheath. Beginners should practice asanas and retentions gradually as suggested by a yoga consultant.
- Forceful methods may result in injuries, and will never get the best results.
- The correct practice of pranayama frees one from all diseases, and when pranayama is practiced incorrectly, diseases such as weakened breath, coughs, asthma, pains in the head, eyes and ears will occur.
- One should feel free to discuss any uncomfortable subject related to the yoga practice with their consultant.
- Based on the bodys nature, one should concentrate on different objects like a white lotus, a water pond, the rising sun etc. during meditation.
- Mitahara, the practice of moderate eating, is recommended for everyone, especially for seniors and patients who are under yoga therapy.
- Observing mauna (silence) during practice provides a unique experience.
