Surya Bheda

The word surya means ‘sun’ and bheda means ‘to pierce’ or ‘to pass through’. In this pranayama, breath passes through the right nostril, which represents vital energy; so it is called surya bheda pranayama.

Techniques:

  • Sit in a comfortable position or a meditative posture
  • Bring the right hand and fold the first two fingers (index and middle)
  • Spine, shoulder, neck and head are keep erect
  • Close the left nostril completely with the tip of the thumb
  • Inhale through the right nostril
  • Close the right nostril completely with the tip of ring and small finger
  • Exhale from left nostril and this completes one cycle
  • Starts with five cycles and try to achieve ten cycles
