Meaning: One can alleviate all pains by practicing yoga followed by moderation in the habits of eating, sleeping, working and recreation.
Effective yoga practice promotes complete health of the mind and body. This article discusses how a yogic lifestyle focused on relaxation, healthful eating, proper breathing, cleanliness, sexual health and balanced behavior will help to overcome pain, as well as the negative effects of an unhealthy and unbalanced lifestyle.
Yogic texts state that even the young, old, unwell and weak can practice yoga actively and obtain success. Incorrect yogic practice produces negative rather than positive results, both at the physical and mental level. Yogic practice is more effective when tailored to the individual after considering ones abilities , sex, age, disorder, strength and lifestyle.
Consultation with a qualified yoga teacher is essential in order to realize ones full potential and experience unlimited joy.
The rules and benefits of yogic practice are explained in classical yogic texts like the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the Gheranda Samhita and the Shiva Samhita. The kriyas, asanas, pranayama and meditation techniques - including mental and physical restraints, form the foundation of true yoga practice.
Method of Practice:
The asanas constitute not only physical maneuvers, but mental balance as well.
Anyone interested in authentic asana practice should follow the four components as listed below:
- Proper Breathing: The sound functioning of the body and mind is always dependent upon proper breathing. Correct and rhythmic breathing has a soothing effect on the mind and body.
- Proper Body Movement: A well designed sequence or a course of action, where of the all body parts are brought together to achieve the desired position.
- Proper Position: The main benefit of any asana can only be attained when the proper position is held.. Furthermore, one should maintain the proper position for a considerable period of time in order to gain the maximum benefit.
- Proper Observation: Practicing asanas is not a mechanical activity. One should have self-awareness that is focused equally on all parts of the body.
Therefore, after holding the proper position, one should observe the internal changes that occur. These four components are historic as well as scientific, and they give the best results.
