The root meaning of mala is mala - dharane, to sustain. Mala also refers to bodily waste. The trimalas are important in our body because they help in the normal functioning of the body.
The three malas are:
- Purisha - feces
- Mutra - urine
- Sweda - sweat
Functions of Malas:
Purisha: Upholds the body by maintaining water and fat levels through sustaining the "agni", and helping proper digestion. If purusha is increased, dysfunction, laziness and pain occur. If decreased, it results in severe abdominal pain and sounds.
Mutra:
Helps in maintaining and discharging the fluids of the body. If mutra is increased, it causes pain in the lower abdomen and the person feels like passing urine frequently. If decreased, there will be less urine, and the person passes urine with blood.
Sweda:
Maintains the moisture content of the skin, and helps in maintaining the hair follicles. If increased, Sweda causes itching and smells, and if decreased, there is a loss of hair follicles and cracks occur in the skin.
