The navel region is the place of samana vayu; it governs the internal balance of the prana and apana vayu.
Samana vayu controls the process of digestion and assimilation by directing the secretions of the digestive system, and regulates the organs of digestion; the stomach, liver, pancreas and intestines.
Also called the digestive fire, samana vayu influences metabolism and metabolic disorders.
It balances the positive and negative impulses of the mind. Desire, anger, greed, infatuation and lust are some of the negative impulses that rival the mind.
Yogic practice is the only way to control the samana vayu. Hatha yoga especially emphasizes the importance of balancing the digestive fire, samana vayu.
Imbalanced samana vayu may lead to obesity and digestive disorders as well as psychological disturbances. Yogic practices like asanas, uddiyana bandha, uddiyana mudra, viparitakarani mudra, agnisara dhauti, shankha prakshalana, and nauli kriyas are effective for regulating samana vayu abnormalities.
