Post-Patanjali Period:
Yoga gradually developed as a subject after Patanjali.
This period can be considered as the time after 800 AD up to the present day.
Sri Sankaracharya (788-820 AD):
Sri Sankaracharya wrote commentaries on the Bhagavad-Gita, the Upanishads and the Brahman of the Advaita Brahma Sutra. His famous contributions in the field of yoga are the Yoga Taravali that is related to Hatha Yoga, Soundarya Lahari (about Kundalini Yoga) and a commentary on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
Ramanujacharya (1017-1137 AD):
The founder of Vishistadvaita, he wrote commentaries on the Prasthanatrayas. Tantra Sara is another of his masterpieces that explains about Tantra Yoga and Kundalini Yoga.
Madhvacharya (AD 1239-1319):
A gyan yogi and founder of Dvaita Vedanta; apart from his teachings, no specific books that he wrote on yoga are available today.
Bhakti Yoga or Dasa-Panta:
The Bhakti Yoga culture developed after the 12th century AD. The Narada Bhakti Sutra discusses various means to achieve the state of Bhakti
Yoga. The followers of Bhakti Yoga were called dasa-pantas. The famous personalities of this period are:
- Surdas and Chandidas (14th century AD)
- Purandaradas, Kanakadas and Kabirdas (15th century AD) Tulsidas and Meerabai (16th century AD)
Hatha Yoga:
Hatha Yoga developed mostly during 14th century AD. Adhinatha is considered the founder of this culture. The followers of Hatha Yoga were known as Nathapantas. Hatha Yoga deals with special yogic practices for the purification of body and mind. Various Hatha yogis and their contributions to yoga are as follows:
- Gorakshanatha (9th or 10th century AD) wrote the Goraksha Sataka
- Chauranginatha wrote the Chaurangi Sataka
- Svatmarama (14th century AD) wrote the Hatha Yoga Pradipika
- Srinivasa Bhatta (17th century AD) wrote the Hatharatnavali
- Gheranda (18th century AD) wrote the Gheranda Samhita
Raja Yoga:
Raja Yoga developed mainly during the 16th century AD. The famous personalities who developed Raja Yoga are as follows:
- Sadasiva Brahmendra Saraswati (16th century AD) - Shivayogadipika
- Appayya Deekshit - Panchadasanga Yoga
- Ramakrishna Paramahamsa (1836-1886 AD)
- Swami Vivekanand (1863-1902 AD)
- Shri Arabindo (1872-1950 AD)
- Shri Ramanamaharsi (1879-1950 AD)
- Swami Kuvalayanand (1883-1966 AD)
- Swami Satyanand Saraswati
