Diabetes

MEANING

Diabetes is an ailment that prevents the production of insulin in the body. Insulin is an important hormone that converts starches and sugar into energy. Diabetes is a disorder which occurs when blood sugar level increases and there is malfunction in the metabolism. A diabetic condition is often considered hereditary. It may also occur due to lack of physical activity or exercise. Stress and obesity are the other causes of this disease. Glucose levels in blood increase due to stress and anxiety. It increases the risks for infections, strokes and heart disease.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
  • Frequent urination is considered one of the main symptoms of diabetes. A person suffering from diabetes feels thirsty frequently. It increases his or her liquid intake. A patient of diabetes may also suffer from vision problems. Loss of weight is another noticeable symptom of this disease.
  • Lethargy, increased hunger and skin infections are also observed in diabetics. Sometime, a person afflicted with this disease ends up feeling tired. It becomes difficult for a diabetic to concentrate on his work because of this fatigue.
CAUSES
  • Diabetes is on the rise due to changing lifestyles, addiction to fried and fast foods and lack of exercise. An improper diet is one of the main causes of this disorder.
  • Diabetes may also occur due to other genetic disorders. It can be hereditary. Other major factors responsible for its occurrence are stress and viral infections.
  • In some cases, exposure to certain chemicals and drugs can be the cause of this problem. Type-2 diabetes is mainly hereditary. People who sleep excessively are more prone to this disease.
YOGIC MANAGEMENT
  • Yogic asanas can be of great help. Sukhasana (easy pose) is one of the effective Yogic solutions. It is mainly performed after practicing the corpse pose. It helps in keeping your mind calm. The rate of metabolism slows down. Sukhasana also helps in improving the body posture (e.g. spine straightening).
  • Ardha Matsyendrasana (half spinal twist) and Surya Namaskar (sun salutation) are the other two excellent yogic poses. The sun salutation pose is beneficial for the adrenal glands, kidneys and the liver. However, it should be performed under the guidance of a Yoga instructor.
  • Kapalabhati and Anuloma-Viloma are also effective Yoga solutions. A person suffering from diabetes can get excellent results after practicing these asanas for some time. There is a noticeable decrease in the blood sugar level. One can get de-stressed and reduce anxiety pangs by practicing these asanas.
  • Double leg raises, Matsyasana (fish pose) and Savasana (corpse pose) also help in the treatment of diabetes. Tadasana, or tree pose, is another effective Yoga solution.

  • Diet is an important area of focus for a diabetic. Patients suffering from diabetes must eat a balanced diet.
  • A diet which increases kappa dosha (such as fats, sugar, rice and potato) should be avoided by a diabetic.
  • Doctors always advise a diabetic to exercise regularly. They can also practice several Yogic asanas.
  • Weight reduction is very essential for a patient suffering from diabetes. Walking is considered one of the most effective ways to counter diabetes.
  • Smoking, alcohol and sleeping at odd hours should be avoided.
AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT
  • Eugenia Jambolana (Jambhul) powder can be helpful in the treatment of diabetes.
  • Ceasalpinia Crista (Sagar Gota), Turmeric, Gymnema Sylvestre (Gurmar), Shilájit are some effective Ayurvedic solutions. Aegle Marmelos (Bel), Triphala and Neem are other good Ayurvedic herbs.

Diabetes can be treated with medical intervention. But one needs to keep the blood sugar level in check by eating proper diet. Regular exercise is also essential for a diabetic. Yogasanas can also be helpful. Ayurvedic herbs are very effective in the treatment of disorder. In case of a diabetic, it is extremely important to note the sugar levels in blood from time to time.
