MEANING


Obesity is a condition in which a person gains excess body fat. This might lead to several problems and a consequent reduction in life expectancy. Some factors which can lead to obesity are physical inactiveness, consumption of high-fat foods, overeating and genetic makeup. Obesity can affect an individual at any age. Men as well as women can be victims of this condition. An obese person can suffer from many diseases, including arthritis, stroke, heart disease, diabetes and certain forms of cancer.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

  • Excess weight gain is the most prominent symptom of obesity. An obese person puts on extra flab on any part of his body, including belly, face, neck, etc.
  • Obese people experience lethargy and feel tired after doing little work.
  • Breathing problems are the most common symptom associated with obese people.
  • People suffering from obesity might also suffer from high blood pressure and diabetes.
  • Heart problem can be caused due to obesity.
  • Arthritis and high cholesterol level can also be seen in obese people.
CAUSES

The causes of obesity vary from one person to the other.

  • Physical inactivity and excess calorie intake are among the major causes of obesity.
  • Some people are prone to obesity due to their genetic makeup.
  • Stress can also cause obesity. These days many people become obese due to endocrine disruptors, insufficient sleep, reduced variation of ambient temperature, increased medication and late pregnancy.

  • Pawanamuktasana is considered one of the best asanas to check obesity. It helps in the removal of excess fat from the digestive system.
  • Surya Namaskara Yoga is also recommended for obese people. It is considered a complete practice as it includes meditation, mantra and Pranayama.
HOME REMEDIES

  • One should consume low-fat dairy products to check excess calorie gain.
  • Meat, eggs, fish and chicken should be consumed in moderate quantity.
  • Fat from the skin and meat of the chicken should be removed.
  • Ghee and excess oil should be avoided in cooking. Hydrogenated vegetable oils should be preferred for cooking.
  • One should avoid fried food. Baked or grilled food is advisable.
  • Vegetable should be boiled or steamed to avoid fat.
  • Avoid putting cheese and butter should on bread. Chutney can be used as a substitute.

  • Honey water intake early in the morning can help reduce fat.
  • Loha Bhasma, Amalaki, Yava, Yavakshara, Sunthi and Vidanga powder is helpful in the treatment of obesity.
